Sally Stovall

Hello Everyone,

I want to pass on this news as soon as I learned.

Fellow Root-Riot gardener Sally Stovall passed away yesterday after a sudden stroke on Monday. Sally and husband Dick have participated at Harambee for years and this news comes as a great shock. I am forwarding Ana Garcia’s email which provides more details including a glimpse into Sally’s amazing life of service and two opportunities for people to remember and honor her.

Thank you,

Seamus

Dear OEFF Team and Friends,

It is with a very heavy heart that I share news of the passing of our beloved team member, friend, colleague, and warrior for our Earth, for children, for justice of all kinds, Sally Stovall.

After a massive stroke Monday evening, Sally passed peacefully today at 4:37P at Rush Hospital in Chicago, surrounded by her loving husband Dick Alton, her sister Carol, her daughter Theresa, her dear friend Pam, and her pastor Marti Scott.

Sally was not only a devoted, beloved member of our and team. She was the founding force behind Green Community Connections, which later gave birth to the One Earth Film Festival. She was committed to building resiliency for our planet and its people. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, activist, car-free bike transit advocate, skillful facilitator, open-hearted compassion practitioner, champion for youth, maker of great salads, peaceful and determined world-changer.

I realized tonight that the aspirational placard I have on my nightstand — a quote from songwriter Samantha King, "She is at peace and yet somehow on fire" — is a perfectly apt description of our dear friend Sally. She was the embodiment of that quote. Her beautiful life of conviction, care, and stewardship somehow held both peace and fire in its every step, and I am grateful to have learned from her example.

We welcome each of you to either or both of the following opportunities to celebrate her light, her life, what she meant to so many, and what she gave to our Oak Park community and our broader environmental community. Both will take place at her faith home, Euclid Avenue United Methodist Church (Sanctuary), 405 S. Euclid Ave., Oak Park 60302.

  • Tomorrow Wed 5/22 @7P: Holding space for prayer, remembrances, and intentions for Sally Stovall
  • Sat 5/25 @3P:: Memorial Service for Sally Stovall

Please forward this message to anyone I may have missed.

Soon, we will share ways folks can help support Sally and Dick and their family in the days and weeks ahead.

In the meantime, thank you, each and all, for what you meant to Sally in her too-short, beautifully-lived life here on Earth.
